Her: In my Jacqueline Wilson book, it says there is no Santa, it’s just your parents. It’s true, isn’t it?
Me: Pathetic strangled noise followed by equivocal reply.
On consultation with my loving husband, I discovered that she had put the same question to him and he had replied that Jacqueline Wilson writes fiction and everything in her books is fictional. Which was very clever but too late for me.

I had this conversation when I was about six months older than she is and it did not scar me for life. It was in the summer time so Christmas was a long way off which helped. I got a kick out of preserving the illusion for my younger brother. Also even after we all had it figured out, we still never caught our parents leaving out the stuff.

Mmm but I don’t know how well she will keep a secret. Her past form is poor.
